Hi, I'm Jo!
I'm a proud mom of two boys and just celebrated 22 years of marriage with my husband, who has supported my photography journey from day one. I'm also a foodie with a "dessert-first" mindset (life’s too short not to!).
My passion for photography began in high school when I first picked up my dad’s camera. After exploring different careers, I returned to photography and gained valuable experience in both commercial and boutique studios. That's how Jo Hayes Images was born.
While starting my own business came with challenges, I’ve embraced every opportunity to grow. I’m a proud member of PPA, PPNC, CFC, and CAACC. Charlotte has been a wonderful community for connecting with fellow creatives and building lifelong friendships.
At Jo Hayes Images, we specialize in candid, lighthearted photography that captures authentic moments. I’m also proud to represent my Asian American heritage, with a passion project focused on cataloging authentic Indigenous Filipino costumes. My goal is to make every person I photograph see their beauty.
In the next few years, I see my business continuing to grow, helping build model portfolios and capturing community events, workshops, and more. My approach is all about creativity, professionalism, and ensuring my clients enjoy the process.
"Quit creating unnecessary stress for yourself—hire me as your next event photographer!"
(Thanks to @photographybyjlewis, @peter_hurley, and @ajzimagez for capturing my BTS, family moments, and headshot!)

CFC x Macy's Collaboration Preshow Photoshoot
Shades of Beige
The Charlotte Fashion Collective x Macy's collaboration was a groundbreaking event, marking a first of its kind! I had the incredible opportunity to photograph several of our talented CFC models before they hit the runway.
As always, our models brought their A-game – professional, enthusiastic, and fun to work with. It was a pleasure to capture their unique styles and dynamic personalities. Here are some of my favorite moments behind the lens.

Stephen Satterfield : Destination Carolinas
In June 2024, I had the honor of photographing Stephen Satterfield, the renowned food writer, sommelier, and TV personality, during his WBTV interview with Dedrick Russell at the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market. Stephen is the celebrated host of the Netflix docuseries "High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America." His natural ease and kindness when engaging with the audience and his passion for bringing people together through food were truly inspiring.
We had a chance to chat between takes, and I shared with him that my most memorable episode was the one featuring Mr. Charles' Chicken in Harlem. Additionally, I was invited to attend the Destination Carolinas: Al Fresco, the second in a series of three farm-to-table community dinners. This exquisite dining experience occurred at Johnson C. Smith University, an HBCU in the heart of Charlotte, on a beautiful evening with perfect weather.
The evening's multi-course menu was crafted by James Beard Award-winning Chef Ricky Moore, founder and owner of Saltbox Seafood Joint in Durham, using many ingredients sourced from Black Carolina farmers. The chef-led dinner was exceptional and surpassed all my expectations. From the first course of shredded carrot salad to the family-style entrees featuring grouper, duck leg, and eggplant, along with sides like peas and okra and lemon butter rice, to the plated dessert of peach malva cake with watermelon coconut sorbet, each dish was a culinary delight.
As a self-proclaimed foodie, it doesn't get any better than this. It was a pinch-me moment and an experience I'll cherish forever.
I'm beyond grateful for this incredibly fun opportunity! Here are some of my favorites!
Dominique Dawes luncheon with CREW Charlotte
In May 2024, at The Revelry in the heart of Camp North End, was the backdrop for a captivating luncheon hosted by CREW Charlotte, featuring guest speaker Olympic Gold Medalist Dominique Dawes. Dawes' genuine sincerity, infectious humor, and unwavering authenticity held the audience spellbound, creating an unforgettable experience. As an event photographer, I feel deeply privileged to have had the opportunity to capture these precious moments.
With a remarkable turnout of over 300 attendees, the event was a dynamic mix of candid interactions and posed shots. My primary focus was documenting the seamless flow of the occasion, from the anticipation of guests' arrivals to the warmth of the president's welcoming speech, the resonance of Dominique Dawes' inspiring address, and the palpable excitement of the meet-and-greet session. Notably, Dawes graciously allowed the audience to get up close and personal with her gold medal, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.
A couple of things to note - I wanted to convey that the room was massive, its grandeur with high ceilings and ornate chandeliers, details in the sequence of events, and I was able to capture plenty of candid moments.
Here are some of my favorite photos from the luncheon.

Inaugural Charlotte Foodies NOBU-Inspired 5 Course Pop-Up Dinner
As I sift through these images during post-processing, they transport me back to the delectable flavors that evening, leaving me feeling hungry all over again lol! Team Chop Chop Red Pot, led by the talented Chef Erick (2024 BOB Awards winner for Best Food Truck) alongside Amanda and Chef Eric, orchestrated an unforgettable culinary experience. Amidst the beautifully arranged place settings, the speak-easy and moody vibes of Great Wagon Road Distilling Company in NoDa, and the meticulously curated menu, one image stands out: Chef Erick at the end, sporting a wide grin and a rock-on vibe, echoing my sentiments perfectly. It's evident—he absolutely nailed it!
Thank you Evan/fearless leader of Charlotte Foodies and local guide, for the vision, execution, and opportunity to share these moments! I had a deliciously fun time!

Dragonboat Festival 2024
Using a 150-600mm lens for the first time was a game-changer, and I’m thrilled with the results! Capturing close-up shots of the boats wouldn’t have been possible without it. Despite the rain from the previous days, the weather turned out perfect with a gentle breeze, calm waters, and eager boaters ready to race. I had an incredible time capturing my first dragon boat race!
The festival also had food vendors, a talent show, and a parade of nations.
